Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
